contrary mary

hoes
way back in april, i planted 6 squash, 6 cucumber and 6 green pepper in an egg carton. each successfully sprouted a seedling, which were transplanted to clay pots and a planter on the patio. i pissed most of them off and managed to kill everything but 1 squash plant and 2 cucumber plants. i wanted to have a more organized/bigger garden but procrastinated too long (april is a late start for planting down here). a small planter-garden is probably good start for my black thumbs anyway.

10-day old cucumbers - first to sprout
these thrived in the egg carton, not so much the great outdoors

promising growth

baby squash

rotting squash

i've picked a few bad squashes (which i threw into the yard),
but i've had some good ones too.

big squash

growing bigger - squash on left, cucumber on right
somewhat surviving
(squash on left, cucumber on right)

a day's harvest - cucumbers and squash

from seed to dinner
an organic, homegrown dinner
well, the pasta was from a box.

the harvest has been slim these past two weeks though, probably because we haven't exactly watered the plants. they need water? who knew?

  1. well, look at you Mary, Mary quite contrary... Very impressive. I can't grow anything. The whole caring for it and watering gets me every time. Seriously impressed!

  2. I need to plant some veggies next year. I procrastinated to the point where it was impossible to grow anything so I gave up. Looks like you were at least a little successful.

  3. If you don't want to water the plants, you can always take the flowers from your squash plants and put them in your salad. I paid an exorbitant amount for a salad of "baby squash" once....

  4. I'm gonna have to give a try next spring! I don't want to plant a garden, but would love to grow a few things like tomatoes, squash, and bell peppers! Awesome idea!

  6. very nice looking squash! I'm not much of a gardener, but what a neat planter box you have! Gives me the idea maybe I could do a small one in my yard too (although I also forget the watering)

  11. I asked my father-in-law to have the garden at his house and I would come over to weed and water....that way it wasn't in my yard cause I would certainly kill it! result.....it's doing great!!

    LOVE veggies from the garden!!!

  12. I'd love a garden, but our soil is nothing but gravel-in other words, pain in the arse! Plus, ya know that snake is living there and that's just not good!

On a side note....notice how your "crops" won't be what you want without proper watering and nutrients...hmmm, kind of relates to the human body as well doesn't it??!!!
Hope you're feeling better these days! :)

  13. Yellow and green squash are the best. Ours were doing great but lately they are sparse and seem to be more of the dying variety.

  17. Btw, Anytime Fitness on Pelham, close to Haywood. It's fun but a little far to go there as often as I'd like. I need my outdoor running time in any case. Yes, we should totally meet up for a training run once you feel better!

  19. Very cool, nice work!

I want to grow stuff... I have a dwarf lime and dwarf lemon tree and some tomato plants in my yard... but then Jade The Boxer decided to help me with my gardening by pulling the driplines out of them and turning the tomatoes upside down. So maybe I'll try again next year, when she's more grown up.

  20. You are a better farmer than me. Says a lot, huh?

  21. I think water is mandatory for things to grow. Just sayin'! :)

I wanted to get a garden in this year and didn't. Then I was at Meg's and holy cow her garden is amazing...and I felt like a loser. Nothing new there - ha. Love that you got a dinner out of the squash!!

  23. I'm jealous. I have such a black thumb. Nothing green about it. I tried to grow basil, chives, and parsley from seed. They died. I swear! I DID water them. Plants don't like me.
My hubby has one cherry tomato plant and thats about all we can keep going so...I'm very jealous of your squash. Yellow and zucchini. Lucky you.

  24. Very cool! I live in NYC so there is no room for anything to survive.

  25. We have had horrible luck trying to grow from seeds. Anything that is successful is way behind schedule and usually ends up producing little to no fruit.

Go with the baby plants from the greenhouse next year. Hopefully you don't kill those.

  26. Whoa nice! I didnt even plant anything this year but really wish I had!

  27. Well even there was an occasional rotten squash, it appears that the garden turned out FAB. Wish I had a green thumb. Oh, Mary quite contrary.

  28. I'm impressed anytime anyone can grow something that looks like it's edible, and those cucumbers and squash you got looked great!

That's just one more downside to living in New York...no gardens, unless you want to go the community garden route. Which I don't.

  29. Way to go! That yellow squash is beautiful! I always have good intentions with gardening but mostly forget to water...
