i do still run though of course, and today i got in my long run - double digits! umm the last time i did 10+ miles was september 10th, sheesh. i set out without water or gu with the intent of toughening up mentally. i planned to take it easy for the first 5 miles and then pick it up a little in the second 5 for a negative split. do you ever "black out" in the middle of a run? in mile 4 i was running up a long hill, and then i don't remember anything until i was at the top of the hill and checked my pace and noticed it had slowed dramatically. i was successful with the negative splitting though -- averaging a 9:15 in the first half and an 8:02 in the second. depending on how the coming week goes, those faster miles may have to count towards my 4mi tempo goal.
(eta: by "black out" i mean more of a "zone out". i didn't pass out on the side of the road or anything)
sunday (10/24) am run: 10 miles, 1:26:29 (avg pace 8:39), 71*

But "black out"... yikes! I've zoned out, but I don't think I have ever blacked out.
I've totally blacked out during a run. I mean. not like I literally blacked out, I just kind of lost track of what was going on and found myself a half mile further down my course, which is what I think you're talking about. I wish that could happen on every run, actually.

ReplyDeleteBlack out = not good. No water for 10 miles = not good. OK, so I know that elite marathoners don't drink much or eat during races, but hey, they trained their bodies this way. I never eat anything in a 10 miler, I even do 20 milers with no gu sometimes, bc I want my body to get used to limited fuel ( and full my brain that I am doing super when I give my body 6 gels during a marathon). But, I worked up to that (I used to need 5 gels for a 20 miler). So, take it easy and please carry a gel (for emergencies) and some water with you!!! Oh, and great job on the negative split!

ReplyDeleteAs for blacking out....kinda has happened to me and then the Garmin plays his little music and wakes me up to get going again. It is just the mind thinking of something other then the running and you zone out.
I've definitely blacked out during a run before- it's a bit surreal. Way to knock out the miles, but next time bring fuel, you crazy!

ReplyDeleteBut ya know, sometimes, you'll be driving and look up 10 miles later, like "woah, how did I get HERE?" You're just on autopilot, your body already knows what to do.
Back to double-digits is great. Those 30 minutes a day, running or not, are working.
I'm glad you weren't on the side of the road....as far as you know, anyway. That is one of my favorite videos, thanks for sharing it again!
ReplyDeleteblacking out is SCARY! it's never happened to me during a run but it's happened once after a run. butttt i think i passed out more than blacked out as i hit the floor hahaha. i have felt really lightheaded during runs too.
ReplyDeleteoh wait...i just re-read that you meant zone out and YES that happens to me all. the. time. i just get lost in my thoughts and then i'm like, where am i?! hahaha
I think I must have been blacking out during my races where I ended up on the train tracks. Maybe if I stayed on course during my black-outs, I'd be faster!

ReplyDeleteThat there sounds like it was a pretty fab run. I'm glad it involved a "zone out" rather than an actual "black out" -- you scared me for a second! I zone out on runs pretty frequently. Sometimes it's an actual "zone" and sometimes it's just me losing focus...

ReplyDeleteWay to go on blacking out or zoning out. I like the black out part better. When my miniers disease had the better of me when I started running 2 years ago and could tackle on 2 miles I would literally black out and then throw up, etc... Now, I don't. I have gotten better which leads me to the "Great video". If I would have just gave up and said. I can't run because of my medical conditions, then I would not be where I am now. Thanks for sharing that. WhoooooooHooooooooo! Cheers to blacking out and not giving up!

ReplyDeleteI have done that zone thing do, I thought it was just me! Not sure what it is, but I have never woken up on the side of the road or in a ditch either! At least, not yet!
