push it

jess and i must be channeling the same speed demons this week. she recently rocked her first 800 workout in awhile and i just did my first since december 2008 (yikes that's a long time!).

1x800 - 3:31 flat with some downhill
2x800 - 3:49 uphill, garmin beeped at me the entire time "speed up!"
3x800 - 3:34 flat with some downhill
4x800 - 3:40 flat with some uphill

i did these on 'the streets' (vs track) along with a mile warmup, 3-minutes active recovery after each rep and a mile cooldown. normally i do a 2-mile warmup and cooldown, but i was feeling lazy today. i wasn't entirely sure what pace to aim for since i'm just getting back in the swing of things, so i plucked 3:30-3:40 out of mid-air. i programmed the workout into my garmin so i wouldn't have to constantly check to see how far it'd been, plus i like the mario brothers-ish tune it plays when you complete the workout.

other than thinking about how hard the 800's were, i also pondered why my upper body is more sore after doing yoga than pushups, how badly i need to get my core into shape, and good lord there are a lot of acorns on the ground!

i got another coupon code for zing bar lovers (wheat, gluten, soy and corn free) - enter "boo" for 15% off chocolate peanut butter or chocolate coconut flavored bars, valid til 10/31. (i was emailed this coupon and am just sharing it; i am not being paid or perk'd to do so. i can't even eat zing bars 'cause of the nuts!).

  1. With push ups we tend to stop at a certain number but yoga kept you going.....

  6. Dude, how'd you beat me to speed work? I'm all like, "yeah, I got three weeks of 40 miles under my belt, I'm 18 weeks out form my goal race, time to do some speed work" and you're all like, "yeah, I gotta couple 20 mile weeks going, I'll just whip out some fast 800's no biggy".

    Nice work.

  7. You seriously have to watch those acorns, I have stepped on similar random nutty type objects wile running and gone down hard. You'd think with all the biking my worst injury would be due to wiping out while going down a hill at 40 miles and hour. Nope - it was a random nutty type object.

  8. I liked your synopsis of your thought process. "800s are hard. I need more core. LOOK AT ALL THEM DAMN ACORNS!" For all my flowery posting about what I think about while I run, don't get the wrong idea, because I also have thoughts exactly like these. This afternoon, in fact, I spent at least a mile trying to figure out what species of tree it was that I kept noticing. In fact, I'm even trying to Google it now.

  9. O my Lord, did I actually listen to that crap when I was in Highschool? gross....lol. Still cool I guess. then again. Hey nice work on the speedy 800s man. I won't be doing anything like that until next spring. haha har. Splendid times too if I might add! Now you got plenty of crack into that running. Run Lindsay Run! When you were stepping on acorns, did it remind you of m and ms? lol

  10. I wonder if Patrick keeps repeating nutty type object for a reason? He's not referring to you, is he?

  13. Good job on the speed work. Most of the time, I prefer to do speedwork on the roads (minus nuts and potholes in the dark)... It gives me the sense of actually going somewhere... ;-)
