keeping the taper exciting

in case things haven't already been crazy enough for the past 5 or so months (long days, lots of driving, little time for myself/to relax), i hit a deer this morning. plowed it down.

in my defense, i was driving even safer than normal. i was right at the speed limit (55mph) and i wasn't even looking at my phone. suddenly, i saw an object dashing into my headlights. the deer crossed the four-lane, divided highway from my left, and time seemed to stand still as it galloped directly in front of my car. it was freaky, especially since it's pitch black dark out at 6am (in the country, no lights). for a split second i thought of zombies (random) until i recognized that it was a deer. i braked, but i didn't slam on them. loud boom. the front right side of my car slammed into the right hind leg of the deer, and i started crying almost immediately. i'm such a girl sometimes.

i didn't know the proper protocol for hitting a deer so i continued on to work. apparently you're supposed to pull over, call the police and they'll write up a report. if you see me on america's most wanted... you'll know why.

it could've been much worse. apparently deer come flying through your windshield sometimes. i was lucky to not hit it straight on as it would've mangled the front end. my right headlight case is cracked, but the lights still work. the front bumper has a couple cracks, but it's not immediately noticeable. a piece is missing off the side bumper and the side panel is dented above the right tire. some of the guys at work gave their manly input of $1000 estimates for the repairs - no biggie, that's what insurance is for. so far, state farm has been very helpful and easy to work with. (let's hope i don't have to bad mouth them when i get the car to the shop!)

i was made fun of all day by the guys at work - getting called the "deer slayer" and hearing tales about how the baby fawns were standing by the mama deer saying "wake up mom". one of them also drew me a picture:

pure skills. good thing he drew a circle around my head so i would know i was stick figure.

i used to give the guys at work a hard time for hunting innocent deer. now i think i might ammo up and join them (not really... but it is annoying that they are stupid and charge out into the road).

in actual running news -- i took monday off because i was exhaused. i spent 9 hours trying to make a 5 hour drive on sunday (thank you rockslide at the nc/tn border) and driving, you know, is very taxing. i really don't get how sitting in the car makes you feel so tired but it does.

tuesday i was so not in the mood to run. i am all too ready to milk the "i'm recovering from a marathon so i don't have to run this week" excuse. i managed to slog out 3 piddly miles. whatev, it's taper.

today (wednesday) i got in what was probably my first ever fartlek run. i know you're supposed to maintain some of intensity while decreasing mileage in a taper, but i didn't want to induce the "off" feeling. i settled for a semi-push effort, successfully reminding the legs that they can turn over and practicing some random, positive self-talk (relax your arms, breathe easy, surge - you'll feel better, etc). it turned out to be a nice little 5 mile run.

  1. I've hit two deer in my life and it's totally like there is nothing you can do about it. Everything happens so fast. I, however, did call the police and let them know where they could find the carcass. They probably took it home and made venison.

It's funny, now that the marathon is over for me, I'm looking forward to running again. ?!?

  2. Wow, glad you're still alive to joke about the deer...That could've been disastrous. What a scary morning.

  3. OMG - That picture is funny! (in a sick way ;))
You really are lucky it wasn't worse. I always think I'd swerve and get into a even bigger wreck.
    Poor Bambi. ;)

  4. I worry about hitting a dear all the time since they are all around the highway I take out to swimming. I'm so glad that it wasn't more serious for you. I would have started crying too!!

I'm sorry to hear you are still having this off feeling. How weird. I hope it sorts itself out before the big race!!

  5. Oh no! That's scary! Especially since you thought of zombies (because I totally would've done the same thing! Ha ha!)

    That still sucks though. :(

  6. Oh "deer!" Glad you're OK, killer!! See you in NY in 3 days...I'll be wearing a blue shirt with "Autism Speaks" and "Rick" on it, so I'll be able to find (I think!) in the Blue area before the marathon.

  7. Never mind the car, glad YOU're ok!! Deer are hopeless, sometimes they seem to WANT to leap out in front of the car! We have moose and wild boar too, all camouflage-colored and sneaky...

Fartleks are great, the legs wake up but as it's all random you never end up with a fail feeling as it was only a game. Win-win!

  8. I just missed a deer once and I still remember how my heart had jumped up to my throat after that. I've seen some NASTY deer accidents in my lifetime and so far, never me!
    Glad all is well!

  9. So thankful you are all right. I hear you on the taper!

  10. Glad to hear you're okay. Some of these deer collisions are heinous. We have our share of deer running out on the road, but (knock on wood), I haven't hit one yet.

  11. Glad you're okay! I'm sorry about the collision!!!! That almost made me tear up about the baby deer standing by the mom saying "Wake up Mom" - tell those men to be quiet and they almost made ME cry! LOL

  12. Ah, about hitting the deer. I am glad you are ok, they can cause lots of damage.

You must be getting very excited about the marathon!!!

  13. I hit a deer on my way to Panama City Beach similar to the way you did. I called the local police and they told me that they were not coming out because I hit a deer. So, you should be fine. My state farm agent was cool with everything. I just paid my deductable and all was good. Glad your okay, Deer Slayer!

  14. Oh CRAP, not a good way to start the day. Glad you (and the car) are okay! LOL at the guys at work... stick-figure-dear-slayer-lindsay. ;)

3 days to go... 4 days til you can take a hiatus guilt-free. :)

  15. Being hit by a deer can have deadly results- so happy to hear you are okay! A deer hit me once (yes, IT hit ME) and my car was totalled!

  16. In 2005 I hit a deer on Halloween night. ACTUALLY, the deer hit ME. I never saw it, just heard it - I'm sure you can imagine the thought that went through my head!!! LUCKILY, no one was hurt other than the banged up deer...and my daughter (who was 3 at the time) thought the deer was going to come after us, lol. Glad you're okay!

BTW, I tagged you over at my blog! ;)

  17. Yes, deer are stupid. My husband hit one while driving a brand new car that was only like a week old. Glad the damage was not much worse and you're OK.

    Yay for the nice 5-miler!

  18. That is the second deer hitting I have heard of already this month. What a bunch of maniacs those little creatures are. (UM, yeah, I guess not little considering the damage they cause!)

Glad you got some miles in. Keep milking that recovery. ;)

  19. My dad hit a deer once when I was growing up, smushed in the whole front of his truck. Those are strong creatures! Glad you weren't hurt and your car wasn't hurt. Your co-workers are pure artistry, that is some exquisite drawing there!

  20. OMG so glad you are ok!!!! That stick figure drawing is HILARIOUS!!!! I recently got into a deer related accident myself (yet another reason NOT to live up North) and it scared the begees out of me!!! Steer clear of the dear girl, you've got a marathon to run!!!!

  21. Could have been much worse...my uncle was killed when he hit a deer on his motorcycle.. Glad you are OK.

Good luck this weekend.. Use the guys at work to distract you from any nerves..

  22. OMG these comments on deer deaths are shocking and scary. All I can say is, so sorry for the loss of a deer but so happy you're okay.
Sounds like your 5 miler was a success!

  23. Glad you are ok. I hope the rest of your taper is smooth sailing.

  24. Glad you're OK after the deer incident. Hitting a deer can be bad news! Hope everything works out with the insurance!

  25. OMG, so scary!! I am so glad you are okay--and that your car isn't too beat up. And I hear you on the driving . . . I drove 5 hours to my sister's and back this past weekend, and I was WIPED!

OMG, just a few days now!! :)

  26. Oh, you mean you didn't put it in your trunk and take it with ya?

So glad you are ok! and not injured! Sucks to be that deer, too, but oh well.

Enjoy the taper... I can't wait for your marathon!!!

  27. Ok, this is sad and scary on so many levels. However, I think the picture is hillarious!

  28. I can't believe you hit a deer and then drove off. *head shaking, punctuated with laughter*

Boy, I bet you were shaking after you drove off. I used to have an early morning motor delivery paper route. And one morning I hit two rabbits. I'd never hit a rabbit in my life, but two in one morning? What are the odds?

But, everyone who commented above me is right, at least you're alright. Those are pretty funny guys you work with.

Well, you're going to do great on this race with all that tapering. I think tapering does wonders.

  29. I'm happy you weren't injured by that deer, I had a frirend who unfortunately had the deer come through the windshield ... its not pretty (he was okay though).

Glad you're enjoying your taper though, it'll all be worth it on Sunday, good luck in your race! run smart!

  30. OMG, now I know what you were talking about on Twitter. you are really lucky, actually, deer can sometimes total your car, not to mention much worse. You can get these things called "deer whistles" - they're stick-ons, that you put on the front of your car, and whenever you drive over 35 mph, the wind goes throw them and emits a sound that humans can't hear, but the deer can, and it lets them know you are around. Bill always laughs at me, but my mom has given them to me a few times (they can come off in the car wash) and I think they do work. Plus, they are cheap.

if it makes you feel better, i would have also been crying.

  31. Oh, jeez! I can't believe it!
At least you weren't hurt and your car isn't too bad. But, still. UGH!

You definitely worked with some skilled artists ;-)

  33. Now I feel like I've missed out. I've been around for 52 years and the closest I've come to a hitting a deer is the smooshing the neighbor's dog.

I did get a lecture once in Northern California though from a cop about how dangerous it was to be driving 90 mph because if I were to hit a deer it would be curtains. He still gave me the ticket.

Seriously - happy to hear that the damage was light and you are fine.

And hang in there. Only a few more days! I'm getting excited! Woo hoo!

  34. Goodluck this weekend! Sending you a thought of decent weather!!!

  35. OMG I would have totally been crying. I've only had one car-meets-animal experience and that was a squirrel, so I can't even imagine what a shock it was...not to mention scary! Like other people who've commented I've heard horror stories about deer collisions that ended badly, so I'm glad your OK! [The zombie thing cracked me up though! haha]

Kick some asphalt this weekend!! Taper is great :) You're going to do awesome!

  36. What a bad way to start your day! Good thing you're working with a bunch of jokers. Bet that helped - kinda, sorta! ; )

Hope you have one great weekend! Good luck!

  37. I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to turn you in! Lol. I would be totally freaked out if I hit a deer too. I think I have to worry more about cat/dogs and car junk while driving.

It's funny, I will be struggling so hard to stay awake while driving, but the very moment I become the passenger, I'm fine. It's having to HAVE to concentrate on the road and pay attention that is taxing, I hate it! When are we going to have cars that drive for US??

  38. It’s great to have such thoughtful buds at work. We do the same, and only need the slightest excuses for a good laugh. One time a co-worker was getting a speeding ticket on the way to work while everybody was passing by. When he arrived late, his office had barricade tape wrapped around his desk, chair, and entrance to his office with signs posted (Under investigation by the police). On the flip side, we were very subconscious not to get a speeding ticket ourselves. All in good humor!
