overwhelmed

happy belated thanksgiving all (of the americans), and happy regular weekend to everyone else.

like many others, i was treated to 3 lovely days off work, but not without making up for that by working the sunday before thanksgiving first. when i left kentucky last tuesday, i checked out of the hotel(s) for good! well, for now anyway, you never know.

today i moved in to my second home aka, a little apartment in ky. the rent is more than my mortgage (yippi), but that's probably because it's furnished and there's no lease involved. it's definitely not because it's in a more desireable area... please kentucky. it's not that bad, and at least i no longer have an hour commute (woohoo!).

anyway, since i'm no longer confined to a hotel room and microfridge, i had to go food shopping for the first time since february. it was scary. i tried to make a shopping list, but i have not had to plan a meal in 9 long months. how do you do this? is there a book out there on "how to food shop"? life was so much easier having breakfast made for you, eating out often, and heating up frozen veggies. i will miss that aspect of the hotel-life.

why is butter like $3 more than margarine? why is a single pot like $30? (why didn't i bring kitchen-y items with me?) food shopping stinks. i felt like i was going to have a breakdown in the store. i was very intimidated in the checkout line. the lady behind me was putting the pressure on me so i was trying to load the belt as fast as i could. i used to be better at organizing the different food types for checkout/bagging but not today.

question: i bought liquid dish soap - can i use that in the dishwasher? sparingly? (am i betty homemaker or what?) i used to be better at this grown-up/feed yourself/clean the house stuff, at least a little bit, i promise...

oh yeah, running. been doing a little of that; emphasis on the little.

  1. OK, so I asked my husband about the detergent! Can you tell who does dishes here? He says that you can't use it in the dishwashing machine, but you can buy a liquid type that you can also use when doing dishes by hand.
    Congrats on the new apt!

  2. nooo no sink dish liquid stuff in the dishwasher! I did it twice ...and ended up with a kitchen full of suds, twice, LOL!

  3. Im just grateful I don't have to worry about food shopping. I know I would struggle. I think the only way my parents have managed it is by planning meals in advance and shopping accordingly. I dread the day (sometime soon) when I have to make those decisions on my own.

  5. It does take practice, especially the first couple of (dozens of) times. Good luck!

  6. Oh goodness, don't use regular dish soap in the dishwasher...unless you want to clean your floor too. :) But hey, that would kill two birds with one stone right?
    New apartments are fun though.

  7. Pretty sure you need the soap that goes in the dishwasher.

Pots and things are cheaper at Target, Walmart, Ross and the like.

I am not a fan of grocery shopping so I totally agree!!

  8. hmmmm you could have asked me on the phone if you can use dish soap. NO! unless you want bubbles filling up your kitchen :-)

  11. Yeah, no more commuting! I'm happy you're in your new place...are there any good hills around?? Have fun settling in!

  12. What a hilarious post lindsay! You know, sometimes I get so wrapped up in reading about everyone's exploits I kind of forget that you have a normal life to live too. Thanks for sharing a few laughs.

  13. I agree with the slow cooker comment. They are the greatest. You can turn the crappiest cut of meat into a mouth watering roast after 12 hours in one of those!
I couldn't imagine not having done any shopping or cooking since february.
No wonder you get such high totals for a week for running-you don't have to spend any time in the kitchen!!

  14. Nice to not commute an hour any longer. I can't imagine spending that much time in a car everyday. My 20 minute commute pushes my sanity.

Good luck settling into your new place!

  15. Yay for no more hotel life! Congrats! As for dish soap... um I have no idea! I suck at big girl life. I buy the little tabby things.

    On a completely unrelated note;

    1. How close are you to Chattanooga, TN?

    2. What's your address, for stalking purposes of course, so I can send you a xmas card! :)

  16. Awww, Lindsay is all grown up! LOL! You'll get the hang of things again. (Sometimes I still feel overwhelmed at the grocery store - hahaha)

Big NO to the regular dishsoap in the dishwasher. Sorry!!

    Good luck settling into things.

  18. So awesome-- you'll get the hang of food shopping soon. And I bet you're relieved to be out of the hotel!!

I have no idea on the dishwasher.

  19. definitely get dishwasher soap, don't use the liquid dish soap or you'll have a bubble bath in your kitchen.. (I did it once)

Glad to hear you're commute is less now and you're out of a hotel. I know what its like living in a hotel ... but since you're commute is less, that means there is more time to run now, right? ;=)

  21. How funny ... I get almost frantic when I can't plan my meals to a T by grocery shopping, eating at home, etc. ... but your blog post was a reminder that it's really a matter of what we're used to. I don't dislike eating out so much as I dislike change.

It's refreshing and healthy to see the emphasis on "little" for running — the pros give themselves "off seasons" to let their bodies and minds recover, and we should, too!

  23. I love grocery shopping, but I haven't had to start from scratch in awhile. Scary.

I also got 3 days off...and now I work 8 in a row. Happy holidays?

  24. oh don't put that in the dishwasher. i did it once and had suds all over the floor!
i am a master at eating out of a toaster oven and microwave (from med school). you can make pretty good stuff with just those things. add a slow cooker in and you are GOLDEN.

  25. I guess we all gotta grow up sometime no? I'm glad others have answered your dishwater soap question. Food shopping is not that difficult too...you'll get the hang of it. Have a good time!

  26. Hope you got the dishsoap comments in time!

FWIW, I never organize my stuff on the shopping belt. I just throw it all up there. Well, I'm careful with bread and eggs!

You'll get the hang of shopping soon!

  27. Wow, it must be nice to be in an apartment now! My hat is off to you for putting up with hotel living as long as you did. That would drive me batty!

Good luck figuring out the grocery shopping. I'm sure you'll get back in the swing of things in no time! Enjoy all those home cooked meals now!
