no white at night

while i welcome the slight, gradual decrease in temperature (and perhaps more importantly - humidity), i am not happy about the days getting shorter. the sun is just starting to crest the horizon when i get ready for work around 6:45am, and dusk kicks in before 8pm. i am definitely a summer girl - i love the days where the sun doesn't set until 9pm or later.

i was recently sent this video by a rep for 3m. it's a good reminder to us all as we hit the pavement in the dark mornings or evenings this fall and winter.

i definitely failed this test - makes me want to get a head-to-toe reflective outfit!

i know some of my running gear (clothes and shoes) has an emblem or small strips of that silvery-reflective stuff (scientific name), but i do wonder if it is enough. my road id anklet has a good-sized strip of reflective material all the way around and when i know i'm running in the dark i wear this brooks nightlife hat ($24), complete with blinky red light on the back. dorky, yes, but i haven't been turned into road kill either.

new balance offers the 360 jacket ($90) for men and women that is made using 3m scotchlite reflective material. it just missed the cut for fashion week, but we runners eat too much to be found within 3 miles of the runway anyway. joking aside, the reflective material used on these jackets is a modification from that which is used to paint lines on the road. the 360 jacket comes with a music-friendly internal chest pocket and an "ice" (in case of emergency) tag.

as we wrap up the last official days of summer and kick off fall on wednesday, consider how visible you are or aren't to the traffic on your runs and take extra precautions if necessary. put on something with a little reflectivity and remember - "no white at night".

  1. Great post! I can't tell you how many runners/cyclists I see running in the pitch black. I've got the blinky light had too as well as a headlamp and some other reflective gear.

For anyone looking for a cheap/free way to be reflective, check out http://lifehacker.com/5406281/reflective-roadway-tape-lights-your-bike-day-or-night-for-cheap (the main site bikehacks.com seems to be having some issues, but you can get the gist of it from the lifhacker article).

  2. Thanks for this reminder, Lindsay. I love getting out after dark but I definitely don't wear all the right things. I'd love a head to toe suit I could just pop into and feel super safe while running...but I guess that sounds kind of hot for running around here. ANY hoo, loved the video, thanks for looking out for us!

  3. Thanks for the safety reminder. I also remind myself to keep my eyes peeled for cars/drivers at intersections!

  4. i so need good reflective gear. especially since during the winter i'll be at work during all the sun light hours! thanks for the reminder :)

  5. This made me think about (and actually look for and track down) my brooks reflective blinky hat for early morning running...

  6. Thanks for the motivation. The change in seasons always have a bit of an effect on me from summer to fall. But luckily the weather has been really great - so that is good inspiration too.

  7. Granted, I didn't know the answer and was really surprised how close everyone needs to be just to be seen, but I've seen those in "white" come through the trauma room!
We all need to look out for number one! Make yourself glow!

  8. I am the worst offender - I rarely wear reflectivewear and I generally have my iPod on and I don't own a Road ID. I should be sited with a ticket or something! Thanks for the reminder!

  9. Good post! I need to ramp up my reflective gear too...I'm pretty sure the little tiny strips on the stuff I own isn't enough!

  10. Yes, I'm terrible! I really needed to see this video. I didn't realize just how bad it was; I've passed on a $20 reflective vest. But I did hear a comedian once joking about how whenever faced with the choice between possible death and inconvenience, we always choose possible death ;)

  11. I don't worry much about visibility when running, mostly bc I go on a bikepath, but I am super careful when I bike. I have a fluorescent light vest that I wore over a sports bra all summer when cyclining!

  12. The hat is cool. So they make one with a lamp on the front? Headlamps, red blinky lights and reflective vests are required for nighttime running at Ragnar.

It's fun chasing down the blinking red lights in the distance....until you catch one and realize it's just a sign telling you to turn left.

  13. This is excellent. I'm guilty of wearing "light" colored clothing in the dark and hoping it's enough to get by. Pretty soon here it'll be time to whip out my ultra-cool reflective vest...

  14. wow, thank you so much for the video and post. i would think that white was the best thing to wear since duh its bright...but i guess not. i never run at night but this is still good to know. salamat ;)

  15. Great video. I often wonder how visible I am to traffic at night, considering I almost get hit by cars nearly every time i run in broad daylight.

  16. Great clip! I didn't know white did so little!

  17. Since I started running relays last year, my stock on safety equipment has tripled and I made a habit of using it even if it's looks dorky.

The piece that I utilize the most, is a very light safety vest (Ironman brand, 10 bucks or so). I can just put that over any top I own and improve my visibility without annoying me by being bulky and in the way.

  18. That’s crazy! Thanks for sharing because I thought I was doing good by wearing white.

  19. Wow, what an amazing video! Only 250 feet, eh? I have a Brooks Nightlife half zip pullover I like to use when I'm running in the dark, but I will admit that I probably don't wear it as often as I should. Thanks for the reminder!

  20. I agree- I am totally okay with less humidity but I want my long nights back!!!

I am always shocked at how many bikers dont wear helmets or wear reflective gear...and THEN ride in front of cars!

  21. It's a little depressing that the days are getting shorter... pretty sure I will be starting my next race in the dark!

I'm BAD. Don't have much in reflective gear and no lights. Need to get on that...

  22. Wow. I have a reflective vest that I feel totally safe in. That video shows me I'm in more of a "better than nothing" category. Thanks for posting.

  23. Great post and good reminder. I'm glad to say our spring is here in all its glory and my morning runs are getting lighter and warmer every day!:D

  24. Um yeah, what happened to white being reflective? Maybe cars need better headlights, you know, those annoying blue-ish lights that blind fellow drivers? Those.

Meanwhile, I love wearing my bright green construction vest. It is lightweight, and completely unfashionable. Perfect.

Thanks for sharing this info to help keep your devoted readers alive.

  25. While working the MC200 I got to help the safety guy prepare the night runner's about being adequately reflective and the info was very eye opening... so were the visuals! Be safe out there everyone!!!

  26. Good advice. I have this awful Brooks neon yellow reflective vest that makes me look like I should be doing road construction work, but I'm usually too proud to wear it! I really should. I wear the dorky blinkers when I bike in the dark, I figure it's a must!

  27. I have the best/ugliest shirts made by Brooks with the help of 3M.

Thanks for the post, Lindsay, and for the the birthday ideas!

  28. can never be to safe. I do a reflector and a headlamp and even then have to watch out for moronic drivers

  29. Great video, I do my Xmas tree impression when I go out.

  30. Yeah, it's super dark here when I get up to go to work too, and it's getting dark quicker in the evenings too, bleh. Fortunately it's also getting cooler so I can run earlier in the day! Usually after dark I just run on the treadmill at the gym, I don't want to chance it even with reflective gear...

  31. Thanks for the tip--I just ordered the Brooks hat plus a Brooks jacket!

  32. Great post! We love to rock our Road ID's as well, but we should probably be doing a little more.

  33. The early darkness is a bummer.
I really do like my headlamp. It makes a big difference in visibility.

  34. Thanks for the reminder, Linsay!

  35. Yes, I'm pretty bad about the reflective stuff. I run in the dark a.m. with friends, though, and usually someone has a head lamp, which helps. Nevertheless...I'm going to check out that Brooks hat!

  36. Hey girl, thanks for the welcome back! It feels good to be back, I missed everyone!

  37. Good advice, great post. I like it!

    See you Lindsay.

I prefer winter, or better autumm... Humidity is not for me but you are right, now days are sooner dark.

    Greetings from Spain

  38. Just catching up after my holiday and today as I post it is the first day of Autumn. I love Spring and Autum the best and I will run throughout the winter out doors but hope it is not as bad as last year - Good reminder to check our reflective gear for the winter

  39. I have been told that some of my running gear makes me look like a dork too, but I would rather be an alive running dork, than a dead dork. Thanks for sharing that video. I had to squint to see them at 250 feet. BAM! No kidding. This puts another perspective on it. Good thing they were with those other dorks.

  40. Great reminder. Soon, most of my running will be under a dark sky.

  41. OMg that's scary. I wear white all the time because I think it's the most "visible" color at night. Must go find some reflective stuff.

  42. Hey girl,
    Your comment made me smile:)

I am liking the cooler temps that we have been having but will miss the longer daylight hours.

I went to Home Depot and purchased a constuction worker vest...it works great:)

    Take care!

  43. Great point! It's so important, but is one of the things we pay so little attention to.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't run at night, but I will definitely be looking out for runners. I had no idea white would be so hard to spot at night...go figure. Reflective gear is definitely the smart way to go! Thanks for bringing me up to speed on night running!

  45. Good video! I was so wrong about wearing white!

  46. You are sooo right about this. SEE and BE SAFE has developed high visibility reflective accessories for not only runners but also anyone on the roadways. Consider your visibility when exiting your car - in Europe, all cars have to have a high visibility reflective vest in the glove compartment and anyone getting out of the car can prevent avoidable accidents by wearing the vest.
