point five

monday, january 16th
- decide i will toughen up and commit to an actual comeback plan.
- remember how much i loved making excel spreadsheet training plans.
- leave plenty of clauses on plan for rest days, taking it one day at a time, etc.
- be incredibly cautious and don't build up to 20 miles/week until may.
- feel a little ridiculous because may is 4.5 months away.
- make fun of yourself because you used to run marathons.
- decide you need one more day off and schedule new training plan to start tomorrow.

tuesday, january 17th
- forget to put garmin on the charger in the morning (it's a little dead and dusty after 6 months).
- work all day.
- josh makes fun of you asks if you are nervous on the way home from work.
- attempt to give garmin a little juice since you're only going out for a whopping mile.*
- try to remember what you would wear for a 54° run.
- put on garmin with 13% charge.
- "bezel locked".
- do what you think will unlock the bezel.
- it doesn't work.**
- assume garmin is broken from all the non-use.
- head off on a warm-up walk.
- after about 1/4-mile, slightly lift knees higher, feel burning in your lungs and "run".
- appreciate the fact you went this direction so you can run downhill instead of up.
- announce the obvious to josh - "i'm running!"
- to which josh says "you're on the road and you're running!"
- after running for 1/2-mile, slow to a walk for the last 1/4-mile.
- notice how out of breath you are.
- make fun of yourself and claim you need to make a protein shake.
i'm running! i'm on the road and i'm running!

*i only wanted to bring my garmin so i would know when to walk and when to run (my "workout" was based on distance) as well as for the heart-rate data. i want to get back to tracking my heart-rate data because it worked well for me in the past and if i focus on that i can ignore my pace.

**it took me a full day to remember how to unlock the garmin, but i figured it out.

  1. You know I know all about this! My first run with my garmin I couldn't remember how to turn on the damn light! It's amazing what you forget when you don't use the darn thing for months!

    CONGRATS ON RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I only wish I could've been there to help you celebrate. 2012 is the year of the comeback girl!!!

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only fool who forgot how to use Garmin. Thank YOU for motivating me to just get on with it already. It may take until 2013 for me to have that comeback though. ;)

  2. They are hoping to make a decision SOON on which dept to stick you in. I'll forward this latest masterpiece to them. I'm sure it will speed up the process!!! Our next movie includes running elves, I think?

  3. The first runs back are always the hardest, but I really believe in muscle memory and I'm sure in a few weeks your body will know what to do and you might even be a little surprised at what you can do. It's a rebuilding process but you'll get there, and no matter what, nothing changes the fact that you've ran marathons and halfs, even if you're not running so much now.

Hope you figure out the Garmin!

  4. You're backkkkkkkk! I read Red's comment..and I have a question. How DO you turn the light on and make it stay? LOL

    1. I think Red has a 205 or 305 model and the light might stay on with those. I don't think it does for the 405 (the one I have).

Thanks for allowing a 1/2-mile run to count as a "return" haha.

  6. No clue what that point five means or is that point five miles? Either way congrats to you. That is just so awesome.

And hooray for the stick figures coming back.

Maybe one of you drinking that protein shake can be next?

    1. Yep, it was for the 0.5 miles I ran. 0.25walk, 0.5run, 0.25walk for a total of a whole mile! :)

  7. Yes, it will suck at the beginning. But you have a strong base from years of running and you are very young. Keep with it and you will be running a marathon in the fall (if you want to!)

    1. Eeks! I think I may need to ignore the alluring calls of the marathon for awhile, but we'll see how the reconstruction goes.

  15. Nice art work too, btw!!! An elf, how appropriate!!! lol

    1. the elf was because josh had re-enacted the "i'm singing! i'm in a store and i'm sing-ing!" except with 'running'... i don't think anyone got that though. ha.

  16. A comeback! that is good news! slowly but surely...right. you are YOUNG that is a huge + trust me! Comebacks are easier when you are not a dinosaur like me!!! :)

  17. Yeah for getting back running!!! LOL at not remembering how to use the garmin...

  18. Running woo hoo! Please tell me you didn't dress like an Elf (as in the drawing). It might have been easier without the elf shoes. Just sayin...

  24. I had the EXACT same experience! I went to use my Garmin and it was completely dead, so I charged it while I got dressed and when I headed out for my 2 minute jog followed by a 1 minute walk, it died after only 1.5 intervals so I had to finish the "run" by counting to 2 minutes in my head! It was so hard for me to get started again, but I ran 4 miles this week, of course with a run/walk interval, but it's progress!

  25. Woohoo!!!!

Let me know when you need that PR marathon plan.

Why do you look like an elf when you run?

  26. Yaaay! Welcome back. Hang in there, and it'll come back around. I'm looking forward to doing a few training runs or races with you once things start clicking again.

  27. I took a break from my garmin for a few weeks after my marathon and I couldn't remember which button turned it on right away. haha. I can't imagine how foreign it would seem after months.
Glad you are running again. Can't wait to hear about your comeback.
Also, I tagged you in a post on my blog. I was bored, but feel free to ignore it if you're not interested. ;)

  28. Good luck on your comeback!! They say the hardest step is the first one out the door. I am trying to improve my running too.

I know what you mean about garmins... took me half a run to unlock the darn thing (press the two side buttons at the same time), and I still have no idea what I'm doing!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Great job! I think the hardest thing about getting back into running is actually going out and doing it the first time. Remember to take it slow, and you'll get back to where you want to be in no time. I'll be cheering for you!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Say what? You'e able to go 1/2 a mile before breaking out in a brisk walk? Man. I'm waaaaaay behind.....
