walk this way

my grand return to running experienced a quick hiccup. after two successful (exhilarating) 1/2-mile runs, i missed the next 3 scheduled runs and 1 walk due to my skin acting up (even) more.

saturday though, was an amazing day. i had no pain, no irritations, and could actually move normally (instead of like a stiff robot) so i took advantage of finally having a good day by going for a walk with kathrin.

a 2.5 hour, 8.5 mile walk.

it was a gorgeous, sunny day in the low 60's. i am thankful this winter has been so mild. i could feel some areas starting to ache - feet, left shin, hip flexors - about an hour and a half into the walk, but that was to be expected. afterall, i probably haven't done 8 miles in a month (let alone a day) since october. pretty pathetic.

even more pathetic? my sore back on sunday.

unfortunately my skin (/whatever the underlying issue is that is causing my skin to be pissed off) went right back to the business of irritation and discomfort on sunday. not fun.

a quick(-ish) review of what's going on: for the past 4 years, my skin had been progressively getting worse. i went to an allergist, 2 dermatologists, my general practitioner -- all with no luck of finding the cause or a solution. i'm currently seeing a different allergist (better 'bedside manner', willing to think outside the box) and a nutritional response doctor. recently, i started to think that it's not my skin that is the problem and there is something going wrong internally and the symptom of it is coming out through my skin. i am hoping to see an endocrinologist soon (waiting on a referral) and am also getting on a long waiting list to see an immuno-dermatologist (she is booked for six-months).

  1. That is one long walk! Glad you were able to enjoy the day, but sorry to hear that the 'skin' issue came back with a vengeance. :( I can't begin to imagine the frustration.

  2. I am so sorry about your skin problems... especially that they can't figure out what is causing it. With the docs that have a long wait to get in, make sure you ask to be put on a "cancellation list". With Noah a lot of his doctors are tough to get in to and have long waits but being on the cancellation list means we often get in much faster (although with little warning before the appointment). SO glad you had such a great, long walk though.

And... ummmmmmm.... Josh said to tell you that if you are going to say things like "13th baby" that I am not going to be able to hang around you. :)
    Hugs!

  4. So sorry to hear about your skin problems. I hope the doctors can find out what's wrong and what's causing it, so you can get some relief soon.

Way to go on your 8.5 mile walk :). Honestly, I think walking a long distance like that is harder than running it because you're on your feet longer. And the weather here has been great, supposed to be close to 70 here today!

  5. I'm so sorry about your skin problems...more than that I can only imagine how frustrating it is not to know what is causing it! I pray your "team" of doctors can come up with something soon!!

    8.5 mile walk...nice!

  7. An 8.5 mile walk, that's insane, my lady friend!!

I went for a super long walk with Tappan on Sunday. It was in the 60's and it was gorgeous.

  8. Bummer about the skin issues, but remember "skin to win," or something like that. Nice job on the long walk. 13 kids? Wow.

  9. You must have had the same weather we did! How could you not want to walk with that weather going on? Your skin issues must be frustrating the bejesus out of you... so sorry.... if only that doctor on House were real he would have had you fixed up in one hour. Hang in there!

  10. That's a hella long way to walk!

Good thinking on the skin thing, the body is crazy in the way it manifests symptoms, my foot hurts oh must be a middle ear infection!

  11. Having to wait that long to get into physicians is crap! I wish you could live up here for those 6 months you have to wait...in that time our team of physicians might have things figured out! I take my medical stuff for granted. I do work at one top notch facility with a great staff who are always learning. The Medical College of WI is one of the best....if interested, you know you're room is still ready!
Hope things get figured out quickly. Glad you're enjoying this shit winter the entire country seems to be having, I for one, am NOT!

That sucks that they can't figure out your skin issue. I can't say I'm surprised. I hope you get some answers soon though.

  13. Thanks for the update. It's one thing when you know what the problem is and you can decide to either do or not do something about it, but not knowing must really tear at you. Sorry about all of that going on. ....but wow, a 2.5 hour walk. That's awesome.

  14. Stay strong my friend and never give up. Great job with getting a second opinion. Sometimes you need to think outside the box. I also hope you find an answer soon to ease the mind.

  15. Very awesome walk!! Sorry to hear about the skin issues. It sucks so bad when there is a medical issue that doctors can't resolve. :(

  16. There is definitely something going on with your immune system. I'm so very sorry! I suppose you've tried a high dose oral steroid bomb? Not a fan of steroids, but sometimes you just have to shake your immune system up. Glad you're seeing a specialist.

  17. Sorry to hear about your skin problems, I hope you are able to find a solution. Maybe seeing the experts above will help find a new solution.

lol on Clemson tickets, I will try to recruit a friend to head to South Carolina a game!

  18. Damn....2.5 hours of walking? Did you walk to Charlotte? Great for you though.

Sorry to hear that this issue is not resolving as quickly as you would like but taking the right steps and eliminating one thing at a time is probably the best way to go.

  19. Have you considered a rhumatologist (however that is spelled)? Might be an auto-immune response.

  20. 8.5 miles walking? That is way harder than running. Walking drives me bonkers mentally.

That totally sucks what you are going through. Hopefully the doctors can get the issues figured out ASAP. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

  21. Oh man you must be frustrated. I hope you get it figured out. Not knowing is awful. Once you know you can begin to deal with it.

  22. I think about you daily - seriously - and hope you find a solution to this skin nightmare soon! Keep knocking on doors, there's an answer out there somewhere!

  23. I'm sorry to hear about your poor skin! I hope that you'll be able to get it figured out with the new docs. That is one crazy long walk! Well done!

In terms of my hair loss - it is just a normal hormonal response to having a baby. Yes another "fun" thing that most people don't mention.

  24. I sure hope your team of medical experts figures out the issue. So sorry you are going through this. Good luck!

  28. glad you got to walk but so sorry about the skin issues. i really hope they figure it out. i'm sending you some healing vibes and you are in my prayers.

btw, you are very astute. your guess about me not wanting to use the weather as an excuse is right on. but it was just too dang hot for me. ;) thanks for the support Linds.

  29. That stinks...I had a 'weird' skin thing that happened as well to which my docs told me I was having a reaction to 'something' but no idea what. My problem was it gave me huge red circles around my eyes. I looked like a drunk raccoon. Luckily it ended up just going away like all weird stuff that happens to my body.

  30. After having been through a few injuries and maladies that have caused me to "bench" myself from running for a while, I can totally sympathize. I feel like there's always a "grand comeback," followed immediately by a dose of reality that you're simply not where you'd like to be physically. Hang in there and be patient with yourself—you're stronger than you know, and "maintenance workouts" like your walk will ensure that you're ready to go play again whenever you can see a doc who can help you figure out what's going wrong!

  31. It would be fascinating to see what systemic issue is causing your skin symptoms - something like a systemic inflammatory response. The key would be to figure out what's triggering the inflammation.

Have they suggested anti-inflammatories at all?

My brother has ridiculous eczema - there were studies done on omega3 supplements & an antinflammatory diet on the improvement of eczema. I'd tell you what his results were, except he's my little brother and absolutely refuses to listen to a word I say.

    Good luck.

  32. I'm glad you were able to get a walk in, even though it's not the same as running. And I hope you can get in with that doc and you can finally get to the bottom of what's going on. I know that's got to be frustrating and you seem to handle it with much more poise than I would.
