d.n.flu

i thought i'd have a success story of a flu-five-miler (well, 8k) but instead all i have is my first dnf.

after suffering through work tuesday afternoon, i poured myself into my pj's and into bed with a fever, chills and aches. for the rest of the week, i shuffled from the bed to the couch, slept, and watched every single thing on netflix. except on thursday when we re-closed on the house (refi) or at least that's what josh claims. i told him he was tricking me into signing away all my money while i was delirious with the flu.

seriously though, i watched everything on netflix including classics such as "beauty and the briefcase" and "sorority wars".

anyway. my temp returned to normal and i've just been feeling a little "foggy" still, along with a rumbly rhinoceros cough. i'd signed up for an 8k a few weeks ago and i figured psh, 5-miles, so simple.

so i went for it, although at packet pick-up before the race i was tempted to get back in the car and go home. it was a brisk 28 degrees.

i ventured down to the race start where i spotted a "stylish" runner wearing leggings. seriously, wtc is that. these things went over her shoes and up over her thighs, and they were a sweater-like material.

like, omg we are so like running

of course i immediately think, no way can sweater-leggings girl beat me. no. way.

the race started and sweggings and her friends were in front of me. i felt kind of weird but hey i did just have the plague; i wasn't exactly eating buffets all week. my toes were numb, a first, and that was weird too. i caught up to sweggings before the first mile marker and spotted my pace, 7:38. oops.

i slowed down, feeling weak and coughing up more rumbly rhinoceroses. we came to a big hill and i gave up. i walked the hill. i felt weak and mentally checked out. at about 2.25miles when the 8k joined the 10mile course, i pulled over and removed my bib in between coughing fits. i was dnf-ing; i was so embarrassed. i turned and walked against the 10-milers back to the start/finish area where josh was waiting.

i was soo embarrassed, but josh kept saying i was just being smart, listening to my body, blah blah blah. i just hope i can feel "normal" soon - i definitely felt "off" in today's attempt to run.

you win today sweggings. but only today.

  2. sorry to hear about your DNF - I like to think of it as DFLF - didn't feel like finishing. please tell me that you remembered swegging's bib number and checked her finish time, because that is the kind of dumb thing I would do in that situation.

  3. Josh is right, even if most of what he said consisted of 'blah blah blah'. Being sick like that takes A LOT out of your body! Don't be embarrassed about one DNF. Think of all the races you have finished, and with huge success! And remember that when you and sweggings have your rematch, you will smoke her!

  4. Oh no... That really sucks, but I too am with Josh and think you made the right decision. Get back in bed, let Josh take care of you and feel better soon.

But you can't say you didn't try! ;-) But now.... Back to bed... Pronto!

  7. You were SICK! No worries. Great job for even getting out there and trying.

  8. maybe you need some Sweggings to ward off the plague! lol You did the smart thing..better to turn around when you did than suffer and have to finish the rest of the race crawling on your hands and knees fight for air between coughs.. Soon you will feel well and you will knock out 5 miles with ease :)

  9. I agree with Josh. Sounds like you need to keep resting. I know how crappy it must have felt though. This legging things sound interesting. :) Feel better Lindsay!

  10. You were smart but I get not wanting sweater leggings girl beat you. She wore them to trick people. She is really an elite!

  11. The flu has been horrendous around here this past week-not in my house, at work. I'm seeing some really, really, really sick people lately. I'm surprised you even made it out the door to give that run a try....way to stop while ahead! Safe yourself for May!!!

  12. Josh is right, it was right of you to listen to your body! Sorry about your DNF, hope you feel better soon!

  13. We all have bad days sometimes. I like to think of it as using up one "bad day" credit... means the next races should go better. ;) Hope you feel better!

  14. Sorry Lindsay... when someone in leggings over their shoes beats you, it's a true sign your body is not ready to run/race yet. Now bundle up in your flannel sheet and watch some good Hallmark Channel quality TV!

  15. I'm glad you listened to your body, but honestly... I probably would've picked up my packet and left. I hope you get some rest soon. But more power to you for trying.

Sweggings... the things people wear these days!

  16. Next time, sweggings! Hope you feel better soon. Sometimes you think you're over the flu until you try to run and it feels terrible.

  17. Don't worry about the race, you tried your best, but walking for us is disappointing... but I always do that and hate it.
I also had the flu this week, horrible :(
I looked up at the dictionary and didn't find, what is swegging?
    Get better :)

  18. at least you tried. you get point for that :)

now stay in bed until that rhino cough goes away.

  19. Oh oh ouch, this sounds so, so miserable and I'm sorry to hear it! Go back to the couch with your vitamin C and your netflix and your flu drugs and let yourself heal up, for pete's sake. Racing with the flu is crazy talk. Try not to be too embarrassed about the DNF. We've all read about your crazy running ways; you're not the type who DNFs over nothing. Get better soon!

  20. It is a tough thing to be 'smart' in a race...especially if you were as sick as you were.

  21. You totally did the right thing by stopping, Lindsay. Don't worry you will totally kick Swegging's ass another day. But seriously - about those items of apparel? WTF???

I am so sorry you were sick. The plague can take a lot out of you. But just think about all the wonderful quality entertainment you got to catch up on. LOL

i CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU!!!!

  22. It's ok, dude. You didn't feel good, and your lungs are better off in your chest, not left on the course.
Sweggings...hahahaha! My favorite word this week.

  23. Sucks, but you made the right choice today. This sickness stuff sucks (I had a DNS this morning).

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sounds like you definitely needed a break. Good choice to listen to your body and stop. Get better!!

  25. That sucks! Hope you feel better!

The husband is right though. In fact, the husband is right most of the time :) Husbands are a very intelligent breed if only the wife would listen every once in a while - haha!

  26. I cried like a baby when I dnf'd 16 miles into a 50k. (At least you held yourself together). There are times when you HAVE to dnf. You had to.

My friends consoled me by saying DNF also means "Did Nothing Fatal" :?

    Hope you get well soon!

  27. YUCK! I can't believe you even went to the race!

Leggings over her shoes-seriously! I agree with Jill, you were DEFINITELY not feeling it if she beat you! You need to climb right back into bed and turn on some trash TV.

Hubby is a smart man-you were being smart. Shake it off! Watch out Sweggings:)

  28. You'll be back to kick some butt!! Rest up and feel better soon!

  29. I had a DNF when I was sick and it really was such a horrible and embarrassing feeling. I'm so sorry it happened to you. I hope you are back to 100% soon.

  30. Ahhhh, your loss to sweggings girl reminds me of my loss to pants on the ground boy in the first leg of Ragnar. Perhaps we can lure the two of them in a race together and defeat them. At least you have a worthy excuse.

Did you get a chance while you were laying in bed all week to answer my interview questions?

    ReplyDelete
  31. :(

Seriously - look up swegging so you can make sure to kick her sweater-clad legs (?!) next time.

    Rest & recover, my dear.

PS - got my sticker! Your mantra ran through my head over & over during Friday's speedwork. I'm going to start associating you with excruciating pain if I don't watch it.

  32. I'm sorry that I'm just now reading this, but you've just torn your body up! I hope you're in PJs and watching Man v Food (three seasons on Netflix (he keeps getting fatter)) and watching Undercover Boss and Kids in the Hall.

I'm sorry that you're feeling so much pain right now, but I've continued to find a stitch in time saves nine.

Baby is officially due Tuesday but it could come any time... so crazy, my Lindsay!

Your sticker is going to be sent out tomorrow, so expect it soon! Get BETTER!

  33. Oh man, I'm sorry girl. I hope you are at least feeling better now though!!!

  34. you watched hilary duff when you could have been watching the Animaniacs?!

  35. A runny nose does not a runny body make!

  36. I agree with Josh. He must be a smart guy because I am always right.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Glad you're starting to feel better! Sorry about the dnf :(

    ReplyDelete
  38. WUSS!

    P.S. just kidding

    P.P.S. hope you feel better

  39. Sad to hear about the DNF...on the bright side you probably did the right thing, especially if your symptoms are below the neck. I hear it's never good to run in that case. Hope you feel better!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Listen, Girlfriend, there is absoutely NO shame in dnf after suffering from The Plague all week! NONE!
I actually can't believe you even showed up to the start... well... strike that... I can believe it, but you did the absolute right thing by stopping and heading back to Josh!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Don't sweat Sweggings, you'll get her next time! Love the pic BTW, very cool.

I have one DNF too. It's hard, but it happens. Feel better soon!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I have to admit, I probably would have tried to race as well (just because I had already paid for it..) But yeah, when I was sick recently, I felt like death and just slept a bunch. Hope you're feeling better!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Bahaha I've watched Beauty and the Briefcase too when there just weren't any better options...I'm sort of ashamed to admit that lol.
