getting back on track

week in review (11/30 - 12/06):
total miles: 38.5 (last week's dinky 3-milers became 5's, which i like better)
time spent running: ~ 5 hours 36 minutes
avg hr: 160
avg pace: 8:44/mile (avg temp: 30*)
off days: 1

a successful week at actually sticking to my "plan". i'm not currently training for anything in particular, but i did throw together a training plan to help me get out and run six days a week. i would like to get back to 60+ mpw but i'm not sure how well that meshes with that little thing called "work". i definitely got a little burnt out training for nyc when life was work, run, sleep, scarf down food and no spare time for anything else. (now if only it was acceptable to work a 3-hour day....) for now, i'm just aiming to maintain a healthy balance of running and relaxing.

on sunday afternoon i took a page from jess at seejessrun and made martha's outrageous chocolate cookies "for the guys at work". i packed half of them up and, uh, didn't feel like sharing when i got to work today. yes, i ate them all by myself. :( i ate so healthily all last week and then i go and eat half a batch of cookies in one day; not my finest moment. at least i didn't advertise that i was making them cookies so it's not like they knew i was being a greedy oinker... in case that makes it any better. they turned out pretty tasty if i do say so myself, although my "furnished" apartment does not have measuring spoons so i had to eyeball the baking powder, vanilla and salt. since i haven't cooked or baked in 9+ months i'm sure i was right on the money...

  1. Don't sweat it, you aren't training for anything. Start sweating it when you have something on the calendar.

My wife has baked up a bunch of stuff this week. I've become somewhat of an oinker myself. I wear it as a badge of honor though.

  2. I wish I had the chance to relax. But right now, between 40 hour work weeks and school, running is apparently the only relaxing thing I can do.

  3. oinker? So, that's what I was today. That makes me visualize an oinking pig..

I'm anxiously awaiting the healing of my knees so I can go run and stay away from food.

  4. A healthy balance of running and relaxing sounds like a good plan. So long as those cookies tasted good then I'm sure exact measurements don't matter!

  5. You are too funny! You slaved over those puppies and should enjoy them, good girl! I'm also proud of you for taking some down time. You were working so hard, getting up so early and going through so much during your training. Don't forget that, you were a workin' maniac. Time to let down and have some fun, bake some cookies and eat 'em!

  6. My scales have tipped to 100% relaxing - 0% training. I'm obviously still working on this off-season balance thing.

  9. Hey, I ate (at least) half a batch of cookies by myself earlier this week too!

  10. I love how you are so casual about tossing out 60 mpw!! You are crazy. Keep eating those cookies you are going to need the fuel.

  11. I baked chocolate chip cookies for my husband over the weekend. I didn't touch the actual cookies. The dough ... well ... let's just say it's a good thing I don't know how many cookies I ate the equivalent of. That's what these weeks between big races are for — indulging in ways we rarely do when training is hot and heavy. Enjoy the cookies!

  12. Darn work! Seriously, it takes the best hours of the day and leaves me with dark cold crap!!! Laughed at the cookies. I'm always baking for my coworkers (that's my excuse) and it often doesn't make it there!! Good job on the running week!

  13. Hey, your body was craving home-baked cookies and you sure deserved them after being such a good girl and sticking to the running plan. The guys at work can wait.

  14. What a hilarious post! Ha ha ha! pack up cookies for them - FAIL. You deserve them. I'm glad you got to enjoy them! It's soooo nice to see someone who is realistic about eating, running, and life in general.

About Sunday - no the pain wasn't "bad" injury type pain. It was just an "FU, I'm cold, I'm tired, I really don't want to do this crap" pain in my quads for the most part. Kind of like mile 22. It was really more of a mental excercise to keep on moving than anything else.

  15. Cookies look good!
Looks like you are getting back to your base mileage – Nice.
It’s hard for me to get out the door on those cold mornings to run unless I have a race on the calendar. It’s so easy to stay in bed on those cold dark morning scheduled runs, or stretch-out on the sofa after a long day at work and say “I need a rest day anyway”, or to skip the weight training after cooling down from pounding the pavement.
After all the hard work getting ready for NYC Marathon, you need some down time (~6 weeks with easy light runs to maintain fitness level) to let your body get a full recovery before getting back for the next adventure. Not that the marathon itself was hard on the body, but all the training you did in getting ready for it takes a toll on your system.
Can’t wait to see what’s next on your race menu!

  17. Good job on the week! I hear ya on work getting in the way. I'll signa petition for a 3 hour work week...

This is why I don't bake very often. I'm not so good with the sharing. My Mom and I are doing some holiday baking this Friday. The IDEA is to give it all away... I'm going to need to start building up the will power now.

  18. I cannot wait to get back on track. I know it is going to be like starting over again but at least I won't feel like a lazy slob! Oh, and relaxing...I can't wait to do that again either!

  20. Great Job on your week. 3 milers turning into 5 milers. That happens to me once every week. Cool. If you don't mind I put your site on my bog roll to keep track of your site. Great articles. Keep it up , and as far as the cookies, as long as they were yummy, who cares. lol. Keep Running!

  23. balance is a good thing :) just remember to take everything from your NYC training and incorporate it into your Boston training so you dont feel overwhelmed and get burned out!

  24. 38.5 miles for the week and not training for anything. You're a machine!

I think that totally merits the cookie feast. TOTALLY.

  25. I love that you ate all the cookies. LOVE it.

    Nice week, btw!

  26. I have a weak spot for cookies and I would've totally ate them all too!

  27. Ahhh to work 3 hours a day, that would be freaking awesome. Think how much time would be leftover to do all those things you always want to do but never get around to.

  28. If you're hoping to run 60mpw when not training for anything...how much can you run when you are? It's good to take a break or at least dial it down in between training cycles, no?

An extra few cookies when not in training is okay too, I think...

  29. Doesn't work always get in the way?

  30. That's a good recipe! At least you only made half a batch. ;)

  31. The guys at work may have been impressed that you ate them all!

    ReplyDelete
  32. oh, the cookie thing. We've all done that at one point or another!

    ReplyDelete
  33. omg, you crack me up... you ate all of them yourself? It's not like anyone I know (cough, cough) that would do something like that! (um...yeah...I would, you're right!)

those cookies look awesome!!! and hey, if it's chocolate, that means the calories don't count. :-)

  34. YUM. Thank goodness I don't have an oven up in this crappy hotel (and yes, my attitude about living in a hotel has clearly changed over the past 2.5 months!); otherwise, I would totally do the same. I wouldn't even pretend like I was going to let anyone else have any . . . that's how I roll! :)

  35. oh man, i started making those when i was in grad school, so addictive! i'm getting caught back up on blogs, so just wanted to say hey :) and YUM to the cookies!
