my inner ohno

today i ran 10 miles before the sun went down! ok, well "sun" is used loosely as it doesn't shine lately, but you know what i mean. i got a head start on my run 'cause i left work early to take my car back to the tire shop and make sure everything was ok after monday's triple salchow into the ditch. i definitely miss working "regular" hours so i can run at a time other than 6:30-7:30ish pm! i think that's another part of my blah-feelings -- not being able to get my runs done earlier in the day. anyway, the tire guys said everything looked ok. seeing my tire skids in daylight was eye-opening - had i spun off one yard sooner i would've crashed into a rock wall/fence; had i spun off ten feet sooner i would have hit a big metal drain pipe.

i was scheduled to do mile repeats yesterday today. knowing i had extra daylight, i ran over to the high school track. i forgot that all this snow/ice falls on the track too, and the home stretch was about ankle deep with snow and a nice coating of slippery ice underneath (speed skating anyone?); the back stretch was of course windy. i could probably come up with plenty of excuses, but the fact of the matter is these repeats were way off from the last time i did them about a month ago. what's up with that? it was definitely a challenge to continue pushing it after glancing down and seeing my pace so far off from what i've done before. i forced myself to press on, saying that at least i was working hard.

wednesday (2/17) pm run: 10 miles, 1:18:27 (avg pace 7:51), 30* (heat wave)

january 3xmile: 6:31, 6:33, 6:31 (avg 6:32)
february 3xmile: 6:43, 6:49, 6:53 (avg 6:48)

lastly people - go check out run black girl run and give her some lovin'. she just so happens to be giving away a $20 i-tunes gift card....

  1. Meh, they were still mile repeats and you still got them done. The snow will definitely slow you down at least that much.

  2. How did you ever get through your run with that 30 degree heat wave?!

Very scary about skidding on the road the other day, I would probably just call in sick whenever the weather got like that, which would be all the time in your case. Still a pretty good job on the track considering the conditions :)

  3. Great work, doing the run, despite the snow and ice and the wind. Runs like these are tough, but they do feed the inner tough-cookie.

  4. "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers (aka Lindsay)from the swift completion of their (her)appointed rounds." Yes, I stole that from the inscription found on the General Post Office in New York City at 8th Avenue and 33rd Street. Did you know that most people, including me, thought that it is the post office motto? Well, it's not. I found that out while I was "Yahooing" it at 4:30 a.m. so I could just copy and paste it to use in this comment. Pretty clever, huh? Anyhow, congrats on a run well done. Hey, that rhymes. I am so clever. I am also so half asleep and need more coffee. Oh, and glad you and your car survived the demolition derby attempt on your part.

  7. That's scary to think what could've happened if you skidded a second sooner or later. Great job getting the track work done. I am counting down the days till we can set the clock ahead next month

  13. I gotta think that your mile repeats were at least comparable to the one's you ran a month ago Afterall there's a lot of lost energy if your not getting good traction...As long as you were still pushing the pace, and getting your heartrate up where it needed to go I'd pretty much ignore the pace...

Then again, I'm a slave to pace myself, so I'd probably be disappointed to. Don't let it shake your confidence too much... just look forward to the nice suprise you'll get when you find out how much faster you really are when we finally get some good conditions!

  14. Hm, I'm thinking the ankle deep snow/ice/wind may have had an impact on your splits. No stressin! Good for you pushing through even though you weren't loving your times... you're right, you were still working hard and that's what counts.

SCARY to think of how bad your accident could have been. :S Glad you're okay and so is your car!

  15. You guys are soooo much more hardcore than my wimpy a@@! I cringe when it comes to running in the cold rain, much less in ankle deep snow! Way to get it done!

  16. Ice is definitely reason to run a tad slower. no need to hurt slip and hurt yourself! I can't wait for the snow to be gone for good this year. It's warm in MA today, so the snow is melting :)

  17. yikes running on ice is scary! well i think its scary, ive never done it :) NICE job on the repeats girl, you got them done and they were still fasssst!

  18. At least they're over! I think weather has a huge impact when you're on a track. The wind seems way worse.

  19. I am sure too that the track conditions had a MAJOR impact on your repeat times. Good for you even doing them that fast!!!

  20. I would say the snow/ice/wind definitely played some impact on your speed. Way to rock them even though the track conditions were crap.

  21. Hmm...ice and snow WILL slow you down. The other week when I ran five miles on glazed ice, I was a good five minutes slower...so I'd say those repeats are right on target.

Glad you crashed where you did. K...that sounds weird too, but really I am. We need you around.

I was all pumped to run in 37 degree weather tonight before the sun went down, but with two miles left, it got cold...and my hands were freezing. Ahh...just a few more weeks and I don't have to worry about the 10 degree drop that happens when the sun sinks.

Yeah!! tomorrow is Friday! Have a good one!

  22. Hmm..I'm going with ice and snow slowing you down! Good for you for getting it done. I would've walked away!

  23. Splits sub 7? Yeah, you were def. working hard! And drive carefully! Yikes!

  24. sorry to heat about the triple salchow. How'd I miss that? Your track work sounds awesome, ice and all.
BTW My new Nikes are Lunar Glides!

  25. So I've decided, I need to borrow your legs, muscles, and power for my 5k. Your times are awesome!

Thanks for the shout-out, chica. Very helpful...I'm adding you to my links 'cause you are cooler than an iced tea on a hot summer day! =P

  27. Some great running and writing! I really enjoyed this post!

  28. i think you can cut yourself some slack when you practically have to log the run as a speed skating workout rather than running haha. ankle deep snow is pretty redic too. you got them done in some crappy conditions!

yikes about the car issues!! glad everything is ok.

  29. I need to do mile repeats today. Totally dreading them. I haven't done any speedwork other than tempo runs outside this whole training cycle. It is soo slippery here and there is NOWHERE to run. Those are great paces!

  30. I couldn't imagine running that late in the day (7:30pm) .. I've done it maybe once or twice because I didn't have a choice, but I just get no value out of those runs, mornings are the best.. ;-)

  31. Love your blog...thanks for posting!

  32. Dude. I don't know how in the world you do it in snow. I've lived snowless my whole life (yay for Florida!) and am getting ready to move to the NE and I'm scared, honestly scared, about what I'm going to do with the snow. Treadmill, anyone?

    Seriously though, major kudos.

  33. Congrats on getting the repeats done--I echo everyone else's sentiment in saying that the time is far less important than the doing, since there's no way to compare pace when you're running on ice/snow. And it builds character!

  34. Glad the car was not injured too terribly!!
