sinking to new lows

today started out around -7* and i walked around the jobsite in 0*, so venturing out for an evening run in 10* was "warm" in comparison.

prior to today the coldest i'd ever run in was 14* back in the winter of '07-'08 (i don't remember what the "feels like" was). kt and i ran in like 12 layers of clothes and wrapped scarves around our faces. after that run we grew wimpy, and i'll admit i tend to hit the treadmill when old man winter comes.

sludging through snowy sidewalks

i ran outside tonight in 10* and snow-sprinkles; a temperature pr! it was very slow-going through the snow and i skated around a few icy street corners but i didn't wipeout once. victory. i'm hoping it's not too ridiculously cold in the morning for my long run so i can avoid the treadmill again - the road i run for my long run is pretty open so a windchill wouldn't be very pleasant. (currently it's predicted to be 17*/feels like 7* with possible snow flurries).

friday (1/8) pm run: 5 miles, 47:35 (avg pace 9:31, slow in the snow), 10*

  1. Good job getting out there. I find that getting out the door in the cold is the hardest, but after one mile I really enjoy the run! The pace is slower in the snow, but I keep telling myself that I am working hard and not to worry too much about the pace. I think I would chose running in a bathing suit in the cold rather than on a treadmill. My form and stride are so different!

  2. I see you are victim of Global Warming too. Haha. Nice job getting out there. I like to think of the snow as natural resistance training.

  3. Brrrrr! you are braver than I...I cannot stand the cold nor do I love running enough to go out in the cold. I'm a wimp...i know. Glad you got out there & I hope the windchill is not as bad as predicted for you in the morning!!

  4. Running in the snow is a double whammy. Not only is it cold as hell, but you can't move as fast so you are outside longer than you normally would be if you could move at a normal pace.

    Way to brave the cold!!!

  5. Temperature PR huh? That is a new one for me. Great job getting out there in the old man winters face. Kick it to him, in the teeth, if he has any still. Just don't lick your lips if they are chapped and you forgot chap stick. I found out the hard way the other day. lol. Moving to Alaska btw! ............NOT

  7. I went snow shoeing during the 12" snow storm we just finished cleaning up after and it was AWESOME to say the least! Then after the roads were plowed some, I went for a run. I am loving being outside this winter! Nice warm clothes makes the difference!
I'm colder inside my house sitting around than outside having fun!

  12. So you've had major wipe outs before? Ouch, sounds more dangerous than the cold weather! Be safe!

  13. I'm with Kat - the wind is the worst! Well done for not running indoors, it's so pretty with the snow! About the same temp here actually, well, about -4F this morning. Brr!

  14. way to go!!! you're my hero... Seems like everyone is venturing out into the negative degrees weather but me. Guess I'll have to put in at least one run outdoors this winter.

  15. Well done! Remi ds me of running through four winters in Munich and one in Pennsylvania! Now I live on the exact opposite end of the spectrum where I do most of my treadmill running in the 110+ degree heat of summer!

  16. Hey, I had a temperature race pr too. -9 with a -16 windchill. Man, I felt like an eskimo...a running eskimo.

The thing about this cold weather is layering and just accepting the fact that it's cold, but you can be warm enough if you just dress right. I don't like running on the treadmill.

  17. Lose 15 lbs??? I always try to just run and try to feel my best. Setting a weight goal may be a distraction you don't need. I lost weight this year and I'm running better but I was surprised by the weight loss. It just happened.
I love to run in the cold as long as I can breathe OK, single digits is as low as I can usually go in CT.

  18. This week they said NJ will be having a "Heat Front" and we will be seeing highs of 40. HIGH????? No! Not high at all. Of course, it is better than the 10-16 we have been having!

  19. Temperature pr, nice!
I think I may ht a temp pr tomorrow. The forecasted temp for the start of my race is 8, feels like -2. Hmmm...why am I running? Dunno.

Anyway, good for you for getting out there! Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

  22. Oh wow, that is COLD!! Way to go getting out there, I don't think I would have been brave enough.

  23. I'm positive I wouldn't go out running in the cold like that. I can't imagine running in the snow if it was "warm".

I liked your story of knocking on a strangers door. I've stopped and asked for water but not a restroom.

  24. Impressive. I am not sure I would be that brave :)

  25. Yep, on that kind of snow even, the stabilicers would have helped you. (If it's winter, I must push them, just like I push Endurolytes in the spring and summer.)

Good for you! You're not a wimp! And a temperature - PR, I love it! Although I don't think I'll set one this year - I am no longer into running in negative wind chills. Sorry, not anymore.

  26. I would die. I don't know how you peeps with real weather do it. Major props there :)

  27. I LOVE the idea of a weather PR! I think I've set a couple myself recently ... though none quite as "good" as yours. Nice job getting out there — I'll remember that next time I'm thinking of staying home because it's 20-something degrees!
