13-mile swim

welcome sweet summer time. welcome sleeping with windows open and ceiling fan on. 90% humidity at 6:00 am however, un-welcome.

today's long run wasn't the best, but it could've been worse. it was slower than i expected it to be, but i am hoping the hills and humidity were big factors in that. come on legs, let's get back in an open relationship with hills; the treadmill is getting a little old.

perhaps my eating habits on friday could be blamed a little as well... or a lot. i really need to work on self-control! i brought in krispy kreme donuts for the guys i work with (brought them some last friday so i figured i'd do it again), and another guy decided to bring in 3 boxes too. so, we had 5 boxes of donuts for 7 people... last week i didn't touch a single one, but this week - fail. five donuts. oink oink. needless to say, i went a tad over my calories for the day, sigh. i paid for it friday night as i was reminded why i am not supposed to eat soy products. absolute miserableness.

i needed a good long run to work off my new spare tire, but the humidity was certainly not helping any. i probably should have worn a scuba mask. at one point along the run i went through a warm pocket of air, similar to those warm spots in the pool that you hope weren't just made by some kid.

thankfully, i had a pack of crack gu chomps to keep me going and i pushed myself mentally to not stop for breaks. i worked each and every hill in hopes that one day they will be easy again. i ran in my sugoi shorts and the quick-fuel pockets worked excellently when i reached back for a chomp. i was never once annoyed by the chomps bouncing around ('cause they didn't).

saturday (5/23) am run: 13 miles, 1:56:28 (avg pace 8:57), avg hr (169)

  1. I feel your pain. I too have been a glutten. I got up today to run and barely made it two miles. I know part if it had to do with my diet of wine and macnchee. But I keep telling myself that it's because I ran a marathon less than a week ago. We'll see how long that lasts. Great job for hitting those hills!

  2. Ugh. I'd rather get punched in the stomach at each mile than have to run through humidity. I'm a sweater and me combined with humidity = bad news.

5 donuts? Psh. Step off girl. That's weaksauce. Especially if they were Krispy Kreme - I could probably put away a dozen in one sitting. Not proud of this - jus sayin'. I could. Cause I'm rad.

  3. Reminds me of my Thursday run. I was miserable. Congrats of pushing through. Hills always humble me, though I always go back! Ana-Maria

  4. Great job pushing through the humidity and those hills, chica! Oooh, and I'm trying Gu Chomps out tomorrow on my long run, so I hope they work as much magic for me as they seem to for you!! :)

  6. Crispy cremes....yuck! Not a fan. Now come on..you know that you can NEVER out run a doughnut! However, after my nice long bike ride I chowed down some little debbies (cheep version of Hostess!) and loved every minute of it!

  7. The humidity has really been kicking my butt around here. You'd think I'd get up early, but no. :o)

  8. Humidity + Heat = Death (for Runners)

I'm with you...hate summer running because it feels so hard and you have to run slow. We'll get used to it, I guess.

  11. I'm there with Burger (both humidity and Krispy Kreme).

I'm going to be in Louisiana in a couple of weeks. Think I'll stay indoors when I can. And Krispy Kreme? Pshah. I'm getting me some Southern Maids when I'm in Shreveport...

  12. I sweat like a pig when there isn't humidity. On humid days I am soaked. It does take time for the body to adjust to the heat and humidity and hills too.

Way to get out there and work those donuts off.

  13. I am going to say something positive about heat and humidity. A great athlete will make varying (often bad) circumstances work out for them. Consider Zatopek, he turned watching the kids and doing the laundry into a great workout. The heat and humidity slow you down, allowing you to concentrate on base work and staying injury free. Imagine the winter...

  15. Better to swim than to freeze. But humidity does suck. My eating habits have been just as bad if it makes you feel any better. I passed on the Krispy Kreme donuts at the casino today, but "pigged" ot at Big Bubbas on wings, pork sliders, and chili fries. Washed it down with 2 20 oz. Sam Adams. I can't wait to feel the pain tomorrow morning when I run. Anyhow, nice job with the "swim." I certainly wouldn't have been able to break 2 hours. I still haven't tried the GU Chomps yet either...only place around here that sells them is the snobby bike shop, which I refuse to go to!

  16. Man that would have been TOUGH to avoid the crispy creams. I really feel for you!

Well done on going for a massive run in the humidity - you're my hero!

  17. Donuts and M&M's! Sigh!

Great job, pushing through the heat and humidity!

  18. Dude! When that title came up I though Good Lord! Why would anyone swim 13 miles?! I am a little slow on the uptake.

Of course, I don't know why anyone would continue to run in that humidity either. California = desert. We no understand humidity. I guess you have to be Bad Ass Lindsay to do that! :o)

5 donuts in a week? Pfft Amateur.

  19. Oh man, I can definitely add my vote to the un-welcome humidity campaign. There's nothing worse! And it's so deceptive, because it will totally catch you off guard on those days when it seems temperate...BAM--90-100% humidity smacks you in the face! Swimming is one of the best ways to describe it. Except the water is still refreshing when you're swimming!

  20. 90% humidity at 6 am? Oh yuck, that would make for a terrible run! Glad to hear the shorts worked for you, and that those Gu Chomps were good incentive as well. Sometimes you need those little things to get you through a run.

  21. I have a REAL weakness for donuts... I would have been in trouble.

Good job making it through the run, spare tire and all. :)

  23. The humidity is tough. I hate that "breathing in wet air" feeling. YUCK!

Great job getting the 13 done!
