approaching turn

after being a *bit* lazy friday, i summoned myself out of bed this morning for my long run. it was about 66 degrees but muggy and humid. i've been blessed with a mini-cool front all week in kentucky with temps in the 60s and not humid. i guess it's about time i get used to the good ol' heavy, sticky air.

about 8-9 miles into the run it started raining. thank god. if it's going to be this humid anyway it may as well rain and keep me cool-ish. unfortunately previous experiences have taught me that my garmin is a diva and does not enjoy the rain. i have no idea what happened but at one point i looked down and there was a compass on my screen. erm ok. i turned it back to the regular time/pace/distance screen and periodically it would beep at me and flash "approaching turn". most of the time this happened at points where there was a street to actually turn on to, but a few times it wanted me to go off-roading.

where's my manual... apparently i have a lot of learning to do.

super slow 12+ miles overall, just couldn't get the legs to turnover today :-/ but i'm little miss positive thinker lately and am just glad i got out for a long run, no matter how slow.

  1. would have been fun to see where the Garmin would lead you. I have to worry too much about the dogs to be too adventurous.

Love the attitude. I try to find something good even when the run doesn't go as planned. Way to "get it done!"

  2. A compas?! What the heck?

Nice job getting out there. I don't enjoy humidity and can't imagine having to run in it!

  3. I forget what humidity is but I still seem to remember it killed me. That's the one problem with living and training in California - If I was to try and race anywhere above sea level with less than dry moderate temps, I'd probably keel over. Nicely done.

  4. My Garmin does this too. I'm assumign you have the 405, as their notorious for being finicky in the rain. You can lock your bezel once you get the screen back to where you want it, but then of course, it limits the functions you can work with. Good luck on getting out there though! Sounds like it was a sticky run, but at least you can say you did it, right? :)

  5. I see blissrunner already stole my thunder. Locking the bezel is one of the few things I know about the 405.

Nice run and I'm glad at least the rain ooled it down little for you!

  6. :-) Awww... most other bloggers make me envious of not owning a Garmin... that sounds like a mess! I can't even get my Ironwoman watch to stop it's timer without mistakenly doing "splits." Sad.

Glad the rain cooled you off.

  7. I second the comments about locking the bezel. It is a pain when you want to cycle through the screens, but I still lock mine almost all the time otherwise it has a mind of its own.

(PS: You lock/unlock by pressing both buttons at the same time)

  8. Its as if the Garmin was trying to tell you something! Sort of a twilight zone moment. :)

  9. Ha-Ha, my "cheaper "305" doesn't do that! Maybe you were running faster than you realized, and your Garmin was keeping you on course?! Total random thought...How are the wedding plans going?! :-)

  10. That's bizarre! Your Garmin definitely sounds like it has a mind of its own.

    Great job on the run!

  11. Nice comeback run! Garmin isn't so waterproof sometimes so it gets wacky in heavy rain. I've had that happen to me many times too. Sometimes I have to wrap a little baggie around it so it won't crap out in a rainstorm.

    Have a fun weekend!

  12. Another reason I don't use those fancy dancy electronic devices!
I hate when my "bezel" goes haywire!

  14. Maybe you should have turned? Maybe it would have taken you to a magical mystical place? You ever think of that?

  17. miss=positive-thinker. hm.... what is wrong with this picture?

    JUST KIDDING.

Your Garmin has a mind of its own, that is for sure!

  18. You know, I've 2 bike Garmins that would sometimes just turn off in the middle of my workouts for no apparent reason. I thought it was because maybe I hit a bump or something but now I'm thinking it was probably because they'd been through a lot of rain. I'm on my 3rd one now and will see if covering it will make any difference.

And I had a super slow ~12-miler recently too!
