all in the family

my sisters and i got together this weekend to hang out, and i suggested a local 5k saturday evening. we registered at the last minute and i barely had time to drop the kids off at the pool before the race started.

start of the race
we ran/walked together, until we were about 2/10ths from the finish and had just been re-passed by an old man. my youngest sister said "ok we are not losing to him" and started running hard into the finish.

passed the old man and gunning for the finish

taking a laid-back approach to a race was weird, but definitely fun. a local college baseball team had been recruited to stop traffic at the intersections and unlike many volunteers i've encountered, these guys cheered for the runners/walkers, even the back of the packers like us. it was cool to see people sticking around and cheering for the slower runners/walkers, and to (truly) realize how it's possible to enter races for fun. i didn't even feel like i was missing out on anything when they announced the overall and age group winners. don't worry, there's definitely still a competitive monster inside, i'm just learning how to put it in time-out every now and then.

  11. Those can be just as rewarding as PB's. Not, but they are fun anyway especially when done with family and friends.

  12. What fun!

Me thinks your hubby was the photographer since you look FABULOUS in all of the shots :)

And seriously? You JUST realized that you can enter races for fun? What the hell do you think I do? Did you honestly think I thought I had any chance of winning all/any of those races I have done?

We will have to run together some day. I will show you how to really have fun for a loooong time!

I hope you are feeling well. *smooches*

Random side note: I can't believe you were going to be coming to Fresno and I did not know! I am such a loser! I am very sorry you can not do it, but some day chickie, we will get a chance to meet!

  16. For fun? and you had to be mean and pass the old dude? lol. Just kidding. I would have probably done it too. So, did you get a chance to drop the kids off at the pool after wards, as I hoped you didn't do it during your fun race? hehehe

  18. Sounds like a great time!
It would be weird to run a race for fun, and not worry about time - probably somewhat liberating though!

  20. It is a lot of fun to chill at a race from time to time. I did it last year for the Tupelo marathon, and this Sat. will do it again for a full. I will walk if I want, I will take pictures, it will just be for FUN (no time pressure), and to get in some miles. Glad you were able to enjoy it too.

  31. Maybe it's because I'm a loner at races and maybe it's because I depend solely on stealing the pictures from the photographer's website. But, I am always fascinated by the number of pictures you are able to collect of yourself and friends while at races.

They are great pics and I won't ever be able to remember the good times if I continue relying on course photographers.

  32. I'm hoping one day I'll run with my sister... She'd hate it when I'd take her to the track with me (um, we are over 10 years apart in age). But then, lately, get this, she's been running on her own on the treadmill at home. I'm speechless, but I'm keeping my mouth shut. Don't want to be too excited, so that maybe these jogs on the treadmill will turn into a race together with me one day :)

  33. Sounds about right.
Laid back race = crushing an old fart.

Thanks for cheering my HM PR even though you probably would have ran me off the road to score free chocolate. Seriously, I can't believe I missed the damn chocolate stop which another runner confirmed did exist. Next time...
